SMEG Fail: Qantas Luxury

Submitted by James Purser on Tue, 2011-11-22 13:05

So, as you may know, Qantas (the formerly govt owned, but now privately owned Australian national airline) has not exactly been kicking goals PR wise. It began with the AGM, continued with the lockout and hasn't really gotten any better.

However today I am glad to say that the Qantas PR machine has scored a spectacular goal.

Unfortunately it was in their own net.

This morning they announced a competition on twitter:

Patch Monday - Happy Birthday Twitter

Last night I was lucky enough to sit down virtually with Jeff Waugh, Kate Carruthers and Stihlgerrian to discuss twitter and the effect that it's had on online communications.

It was a good talk and you can listen to the full episode here

One thing I did bring up was #localgovchat, not sure if it made the cut but I'll be doing another post about that shortly

Community Pages and Local Government

Across the nation, there are Local Government bodies debating whether they should be getting involved with Social media and to what extent. For many, there are questions about how they can best manage the conversations that will occur when they get involved, for others there are concerns about responsibility within the organisation as well as any potential legal issues that may arise. All of these concerns need to be worked through sensibly and properly so that when the organisation does decide to engage, they do so with confidence.

Icelandic Volcano strands people, Twitter allows them to fix it

Submitted by James Purser on Sat, 2010-04-17 23:34

For the last two days a volcano in Iceland has been spewing ash and rock high into the atmosphere with little indication that it is going to stop any time soon.

The danger that the ash presents to aircraft (the particles are so fine and sharp they can destroy a jet engine) combined with the prevailing jet stream has meant that essentially then entire European air space has been shutdown. This has left hundreds of thousands of people stranded across Europe and further afield.
